List Of All Chipmunks In Mainland Europe
« Reply #1 on: Thursday March 16, 2006, 00:04:37 UTC »
Great work, Dave! And a very useful list to chase Chipmunks.

It's late again, so here we go with the updates . Obvious ones for me are:
P130 should be placed under Belgium I think, just to be consistent.
1375 is now owned by Marc de Ridder (who is Belgian himself), but the machine is indeed still based in Valencienne, France.
WP851 is owned by Cees Zoeteman/Kroonduif Air B.V.
WP925 is owned by Frank de Munck.

For the rest I'll have to dig deeper. I'll get back to you with updates if any.

Can you tell what the meaning of the asterisks ("*") are?

Herbert

Eurupean Based Chipmunks

Hello Everybody,
A little bit more on the French based Chipmunks.
First you can get the official register view on the DGAC website.www.dgac.fr.
got to "Espace Professionnel" in the header bar
choose "Immatriculation des aeronefs" in the pop down menu
enter "de Havilland Canada" in the Constructuer box and hit the search button. You get all the DHC planes on the register including Chipmunks
if you enter "de Havilland" alone you get the Vampires and Moths as well
clicking on an individual plane give you more detail.

This list is not completely up to date. Xavier Méal sold WZ 845 after an accident in 2000. The last time I saw it ,Christmas 2004, the parts were on a pallet in Belgium.
WP900 has been sold twice since the owner show in the post. The DGAC site has not been updated since the Aeroplane has been sold and is no longer in Rouen, but in the South of France.
Only one aircraft is actually based at la Ferte Allais , F-AZCH.
F-AZNE was reserved for FAP1302, but the aeroplane was damaged when the hanger roof fell in during the wind storm in 1999. It is still under repair.
I keep Rod Brown aware of any changes that I discover, by the way.
Finally for the entry for 1655: it is no longer in Egypt, location is Louveciennes ( my workshop, not an airfield, unfortunately) and F-AZNS has been reserved for it. It is "still" under restoration from a basket case.
N in my name, ( and the registration!) stands for Nigel.
The French Chipmunks, with some exceptions, seem to fly very little and I think the fact that not all the owners speak English, means that the community is a bit cut off. I know one at least, who does not have e-mail or look at the internet.
For those who are not aware, in France, historic planes are on a register where the registration begins with F-AZ. This implies some use restrictions, in particular individual authorisations if one wants to fly outside French Air Space. It also has certain advantages.
Hope the above helps.
what does the asterisk mean against some of the entries?
regards
Nigel

Hi Nigel,

Thanks for the update, much appreciated!

As you are the owner of an ex-Egyptian Chipmunk, can you elaborate a bit about it? I have no clue as to what colour scheme these machines have been wearing or interesting modifications these Egyptian machines have recieved. Maybe a picture?

Cheers,
Herbert

Thanks for the updates guys, there much appreciated.  :thumbright:

I have now updated the original list

As for the '*'s I have to appologise they mean nothing!    They ment something to me when I was compiling the list and that was it, they should have been deleted, they have now gone. Sorry if you've been up scratching your heads...

Nigel I put the (Egypt) in brackets next to your aircraft just to clarify the origins of the original serial as not many have escaped from that part of the world. I decided to use the original serials rather than the construction numbers as a means of identification because I thought people could identify easier with them.

P.S. I'm with Herbert, I'd love to hear more about your Egyptian Chippie Nigel...  8)

As for WP900, I've had e-mails exchanged with the last owner. This is what he has to say on her:

Helllo
I just sell it yesterday !!
The new owner is Stanislas Tutaj and Guillaume Chaigneau.
Wp900 is now in LACAVE airfield  ( private ) in the south of BRIVE

http://flying-dwarf.blogspot.com/    some pictures of the last fly... i wonder if i do not make a mistake to sell her !!!
Happy landing

An addition for the list . . .

Cheers,
Herbert

And one more: OO-FFT is still with Eureka Aviation, though the machine is currently in pieces in a hangar in Antwerp / Deurne for restauration. The rebuild will still take a couple of years to finish, so don't expect it to fly again anytime soon.

Ehm . . .  I could do with a good dictionary I think . Well, it shows my Dutch background. With our cheeses, (French?) fries and Brussels sprouts, we people of the low lands don't need an excuse to turn anything into an eatery. Never tried that with a Chipmunk though. Might make into a small but cosy movable cafeteria :D

I'm sure there's enough I can't find out. These were the easy puzzles, I'll have to chew harder on what's left over . . .

WK642 (G-BDXP, I think) is alive and well and hibernating in Kilrush, Ireland. That's a phone picture: apologies for the quality.

Hi all,

Just a small (and not yet too relevant) update on Chipmunk OO-FFT. Building it up will still take a while. However, the owner has recieved permission to paint this Chipmunk up in Belgian Air Force colours, and will do so when the machine is airworthy again. That should provide for a nice break from the UK armed forces colour schemes that are more prevalent on Chipmunks these days :-D

Note that the Belgian Air Force only had two Chipmunks, C-1 and C-2, both of Canadian descent, but with a UK style canopy. OO-FFT was not one of them, and it's British built. It will recieve the fake serial C-3, which will make it "the third" Belgian Air Force machine  . For a very short history on the two original machines, see the Wiki at the BAHA (Belgian Aviation History Association) site: http://belmilac.wetpaint.com/page/De+Havilland+Canada+DHC.1A+Chipmunk. The BAHA home page can be found at http://www.baha.be.

Cheers,
Herbert

Dave,

Another change in the list. Chipmunk WP924 / G-BBMX has moved on from the Netherlands to Denmark recently. It is now owned by Michael Koch and probably (but unconfirmed at this moment) based at Sønderborg Airport.

Cheers,
Herbert

And as an anwer to Marc's request (http://www.caledonianchipmunks.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=245.msg3182#msg3182), Portuguese Air Force 1301, 1303 and 1310 are all withdrawn from use according to the Scramble database.
