Chipmunks you have flown....Where are they now?
« on: Monday August 29, 2005, 14:11:24 UTC »
Following on from a thread on another Forum, I though it might be quite nice to attempt to track down the whereabouts of Chipmunks that you have flown or flown in.

For example my logbook contains the following:

WP872 - Now believed to be in the USA
WK630 - Now believed to be with Felthorpe Flying Group - Felthorpe
WP840 - Now believed to be with RAF Halton Flying Club - Halton

Now currently flying WD305 (G-ARGG) and WP857 (G-BDRJ)  :D  :D

Would anyone at Felthorpe or Halton consider lending me their aircraft for an hour for a spot of nostalgia?  I promise to bring it back in once piece!

Hiya Berry,
638 and 896 are both in my log book too, small world eh?. from what i have found the chipmunk at Manston is WP772, from a pic i have seen it looks like the wings are silver and yellow bands but it has a red and white fuselage. a composite airframe maybe???.
all the best.
Greg

a quick search on 638 has turned this up, http://www.aeroflight.co.uk/mus/uk/breighton/breighton.htm
not far from me too.

this may be usefull to some of you guys.

WK638 left Manston in 2002 journing to its present location via Stamford, Lincs. Hope this helps.

Hi Greg,

Euh, sorry, forgot to say: I never flew them, I just tracked down the last known civil registrations of the aircraft.

The only Chippy's I've flown are WD305 and WP857 (back seat only as I'm not a pilot...)

Cheers, Berry

WP857 (G-BDRJ) at Elstree   .  Then owned by the wonderful, but very sadly belated John Schooling. Now in Scotland.  I did 20 flights in her between 1994-1997

WD286 (G-BBND) is alive and kicking at Little Gransden.

WK559 (N559WK) Lives in Virginia, USA and I recently flew her 30+ hours in 12 days on a round trip to Oshkosh including displaying her in the show.

I have put my ATC log book in a very safe place and, once I find it, I'll submit the Chipmunk registrations in which I flew as a Cadet in the early 60's. In the meantime hereafter follows a list of those in which I flew during my PPL training at Perth in 1963. All were owned by Airwork Services Training and were part of a batch disposed of by Her Majesty in the 50's. As far as I am aware, all but G-OASZ (now G-TRIC) suffered the ignomony of a sudden and painfull end!

G-AOJZ, G-ARCR, G-AOSA, G-ARDW, G-OASZ

All except DW were fitted with cartridge starters - a frightening experience for a 17 year old lad! - and I did my first solo in SZ on 26/7/63 between 12.00 and 12.10 after 5 1/4 hrs dual. Hopefully I'll be able to fly, or get a flight in, G-TRIC to commemorate the 50th aniversary of my first solo in 2013 - provided that we are both fit and well! I flew G-BCYJ until it was sold in 2002 via Just Plane Trading. I think it went to South Africa.
