Moth Club Rally 2006

Just thought I'd post a few pictures from this years event. Incredibly 50 aircraft managed to arrive despite the weather, some others flew over had a look and then returned base. The landings were to say the least 'challanging'. The strip is 550 metres long, go's up and down like a rollercoaster and often has different wind directions at both ends! Add to this today a hefty crosswind with big gusts and all I can say is thanks for the brave people who tried it and won! For us onlookers it also gave us hours of entertainment!  :D

Sorry in advance for the quality

Ahhh Chippies.....

Hi Dave,

I think this year must end up in the books as the year with the most aviation related events spoiled or negatively influenced by the weather ever. Though still a lot of Gipsy powered machines turned up here, many more didn't make it because of the weather. I've seen this happening to the Leicester Chipmunk meet, Chipmeet, Schaffen-Diest fly-in and many other events as well . . .

So much for global warming, which is considered to be the culprit for all this. Hope it doesn't extend in the future though, or we might see less and less planes attending these sorts of events (and many more worse effects on daily life as well).

Sorry for the rant. Your pictures are nice though and give a good impression of those that made it. Nothing wrong with the quality, so nothing to be sorry for :)

How many Chipmunks did you count? Your photo's show quite a few.

Cheers,
Herbert

Hello Herbert,

Thanks for the comments. I counted 10 Chipmunks in total,

G-AMUF / WB654 / WB711 / WD310 / WK514 / WP800 / WP896 / WP903 / WP971 / WP973 (as G-BCPU)

It certainly has been a bad year for weather, on the plus side though had it been Saturday or Monday I doubt anything would have made it so I guess I should be thankful for that. I think we can also add the show at Mollis, Switzerland to the list as they couldn't put up there big Hunter flypast because of the weather. The thing is it's been glorious all July but we never seem to have many small events then due to Farnbourgh and RIAT I presume, which seems a bit silly as they are for different markets really. I suppose as August is the second wettest month of the year in England we shouldn't be to surprised that events this month are bad. I hope it's good for Little Gransden on Sunday, lots of Chippy action, formation, solo, limbo dancing!

As for global warming, well I guess we could start a whole new thread for that but one thing I have noticed this year is that around Cambridge we seem to be getting a kind of tropical pattern to the weather were it builds up allday and then at 3.00 all hell lets loose.

Keep up the good work.

Dave
