Repair project
« on: Sunday May 27, 2007, 10:58:58 UTC »
My son and I recently submitted at tender for the salvage of Chipmunk VH-UEU.  The DHC-1 was damaged in a forced landing on a football field following a fuel problem.  Somewhat to our surprise our tender was accepted.

The aircraft suffered damage to the fin, rudder, tailplane and rear fuselage when it was groundlooped into a perimeter fence.  The port wing and aileron were damaged as well.

With the help of several wonderful South Australian people we prepared the aircraft for transport and loaded it onto a trailer for the long journey from Gawler SA to Tocumwal New South Wales, where it will be repaired.

Something of an Ozzie odditie VH-UEU has had the fabric areas of the wings and control surfaces covered with metal.  The wings feature two large luggage lockers.  Up front is a Lycoming IO-360 engine driving a three bladed Hoffmann constant speed propeller.

A survey of the damage has now been completed.  While the Fin and Rudder are beyond recovery the rest of the damage can be  repaired.

Hi Rob:

Great to see your photos, and also to know UEU is in such very good hands.

Of course, amongst the numerous tasks ahead you will have to change the Chipmunk front elevation painted on your hangar doors, to show UEU's different nose! I've attached a photo so everyone can see what I mean...

Cheers Rob,

Rod.

Nice Hanger!

Are you going to stick with the Lycoming or convert it back to a gipsy?
Ahhh Chippies.....

We are retaining the lycoming IO-360 for the present.  It will be strictly a repair job for the moment rather than a restoration.

The rear fuselage has been removed for repair while the damaged wing repairs are well in hand.  It is expected that repairs will be complete within four months.

We have had a set back with this project.  When the damaged skin was removed from the rear fuselage it uncovered some sub standard repair work from a previous incident.  A crack in the rear bulkhead was stop drilled rather than repaired in accordance with an approved repair scheme.  Oversized rivet holes drilled too close to edges and  "figure 8" drill holes abound.

The rear bulkhead will be scrapped and a new item installed.

Wing repairs are complete, the fin is rebuilt, and a replacement rudder is ready to recover.

One undercarriage piston tube was found to be cracked and a replacement item is being manufactured in Australia.  The tailplane repairs will be straight forward though time consuming.  the right aileron is badly damaged .
