Portugese Air Force Chipmunk
« on: Wednesday September 07, 2005, 12:40:39 UTC »
Last year we (Chippy Monkey, MarkyMC and myself) had a visit at Sintra Air Base in Portugal. Quite surprisingly, they still use about half a dozen Chipmunks for basic training and glider towing! Juts a pitty they were all in a hangar during the visit.

This is one of them:

Cheers, Berry

Nice picture Berry. Not sure about the Lycoming up front though, kind of spoils a lot of the appeal for me. Anybody else feel that way ?
Ahhh Chippies.....

Makes a pilot forget his airmanship and turns an engineer into a "parts replacer", apart from that I have nothing against the abomination! :-x  :-x  :-x

Quite right....it's like silicone implants.  It may get the job done, but it's nothing like the real thing!!!!    :angel4:

I'm sure we all know that some of the PAF Chipmunks came with a .303 Browning and a reflector gunsight. Did students fire at a banner towed by another Chippie? Or was it strictly air-to-ground firing? Despite the jibe about implants (something I know nothing about!), it would be quite interesting to fly the Lycoming version. I currently tow in a PA-25-235 Pawnee from Kirton Lindsey, and its Lycoming certainly 'does the business'. On a good day the Pawnee can tow a glider up to 2,000ft and be back on the ground in about 8 minutes. So, if anyone needs an occasional Supermunk pilot, you know where to find me.
