Spark plug recommendations
« on: Thursday August 12, 2010, 11:28:34 UTC »
I just pulled one plug to check the size (I've read that I'll need to check each cylinder since it's possible to some 12mm's mixed in).   It's a 14mm Lodge RS9/1R.   According to my RR engine manual, I should be using Lodge RS5/7R or KLG RC5/4H.   My engine runs fine and starts right up so I guess the RS9 is a reasonable substitute but I can't find any mention of it online.    I've sourced replacements at $75 each.   I'd like to buy a couple of spares but at that price, I'm thinking of converting the Champion REL37B's with new ignition wires.

Any other suggestions or sources for original plugs?

Thanks

Dave

Hello Dave

We were running our chippie with REL37B's and we used to get one mag drop after another.  ( i know this is the RAF spec.),  at the advice of the good MR Stotts we changed to REL38B, a slightly hotter plug, since then not one mag drop.  The plugs are however in the price range you are talking about.
A friend of mine runs his chippie with the Lodge plugs, rs9-1r and does not have any problems.

warm greetings

Brian

Bob:  How much do your RELs cost?  What do you reckon the complete mod would cost too?
It is written 'de Havilland' - not De Havilland, DeHavilland, De-Havilland or de Haviland.  Spread the word.

Plugs are about $39 in the US, if any of the group are going across.
We ordered 8 lengths of AeroLite spark cable with one end cut blank and the other with an end to suite the REL's.
I cant remember the cost but I think it was about $120 delivered to a US address. Looks like they have gone up a bit. They don't supply direct but will give advise, then you order through 'Sruce.
Feeding the new wires through the harness was made easier using silicone grease, then make up ends to fit the BTH mag, or wrap bare wire round the terminal.(not best practice )
There is a UK STC for the mod, I'd have to look the number up in the log book.
