Oshkosh: Gathering of Chipmunks
« on: Sunday February 14, 2010, 22:33:12 UTC »
Hi All

I am arranging a large gathering of Chipmunks at Oshkosh this year.  The number of interested operators is growing already.  We need to gather as many as possible.

The EAA Warbirds magazine editor has informed me he will give this coverage and arrange a photo shoot.

Please let me know:
1)  If you can make it with your own/someone else's Chipmunk
2)  If you can contact as many U.S. operators as possible and get them in the loop.  I am happy to do the contacting if you can provide the contact details.
3)  If you are an operator, unable to bring a Chipmunk, but would like to be kept in the loop anyway.
4)  None of the above, but you are going to Oshkosh and fancy a free beer!

Hi Janie, my wife and I are planning to attend Oshkosh, at least for the 1st and hopefully the 2nd day but without an aircraft.
Would appreciate information.

At the moment we have seven definite Chipmunks.  There are a number of 'maybes' and a whole bunch not yet explored.

I have contacted the owner of one of the prototypes G-AKDN which currently lives in Canada.  I am sure they would want to come, they have been before, but it is quite a long journey for them, so we will have to see.  I am also about to contact George Neal.  He was one of the original test pilots.  He is now 91 years old and still flying his own Chipmunk.  That is the longest ever test flight I have heard of!!

Have you been to Oshkosh before?   If you have, you will know that two days is not really long enough.  In fact 7 days, every year, is never long enough!

There is no planned mass arrival as most of us are strangers or are coming from different corners of the continent with different agendas.  However, once gathered there, I am sure that new friendships will be formed and plans for future trips will evolve.

There is an evening dinner of Moth and Chipmunk pilots, but that is usually on the Thursday (to be confirmed).  If you can make it to that, that would be good.

SUCCESS!

Well we ended up with 11 Chipmunks pledged.  Nine came.  I brought two!  Two displayed in Tuesday's warbird airshow. Six displayed in the Chipmunk Showcase.  We were all interviewed and photographed for the EAA magazines.

Bearing in mind that it is a rare event if there are as many as two Chipmunks together at Oshkosh, I consider this a great success.

Brian:  It was great to meet you.  If you plough through my holiday snaps, you'll find a pic or two of your good self.

Did you get any good photographs of the Chipmunks?  Mine were lousy.  I was depending on the professions to capture the event.

Andrew/Elizabeth:  Did you make it there?
